TESOL Degree Course - The B.Sc. LT Program

Bachelor of Science in Language Teaching (B.Sc. LT) is a comprehensive 3-year TESOL Degree course specially designed to groom English language teachers. A student can take up to maximum of 6 years to complete the course.

Blending to the perfect proportion, all the significant components like language, literature, teaching methodology, philosophy, psychology, environmental education, school management and more, B.Sc. LT inculcates within the prospective teachers a maturity level which is expected of a graduate.

The program promises to help the candidate in identifying psychological needs of High School children and relate teaching-learning process to these needs.

Enhancing the level of competency B.Sc. LT provides a sound theoretical base combined with thorough practice orientation.

A teacher equipped with the B.Sc. LT degree is always motivated to introduce innovation and interesting instructional techniques and aids in reaching out effectively to the students.

In each year, B.Sc. LT covers 2 semesters and is structured in a convenient and modular way making provision for the optional exit qualifications of Diploma in Language Teaching at the end of the fourth semester. Such a provision would mean flexibility and convenience for those who decide to opt out of the course, midway.

A successful conclusion of Semester 5 & 6 makes the student eligible for the final certification. The exit qualification here is the degree of B.Sc. LT.

Each semester carry 16 credits which add to 96 credits for the entire course of 6 semesters.

1 credit = 30 hrs of study = 50 marks

The whole program has to be completed within a maximum of 6 years.

Eligibility

The Course, Bachelor of Science in Language Teaching, is designed for those who have successfully completed 12 years of schooling (10 + 2 pattern) or equivalent as defined by the local Government.

Fee Structure

An initial non-refundable deposit of 500 USD* + 50 USD for Application Form dispatch (Only after online application has been approved by TEFL International)

*TEFL International students will get a benefit of paying only 300 USD as admission deposit, instead of 500 USD.

First semester fee of 750USD on filling up the University Form

Semester fees will be 750 USD each, for all the semesters. The amount includes 100 USD dispatch fee for materials.

In each semester, examination fee will be 100 USD (to be paid before exams).

Road Map

How to proceed: Pre-application

Submit your online application.
Evaluation of the application at this preliminary level will determine your eligibility. If found successful, your application will be accepted into the program.
You will be asked to pay $500US.
As a following step, prospective candidates will have to fill up hard copy application form furnished by SMU, as per instructions, for new/fresh admissions and booking the course.
All completed application forms with the relevant documents and fees will be scrutinized by TEFL International. Once verified the authenticity of the documents and completion of the form, TEFL International will arrange to send these to the University back end office at Manipal.
Application evaluation would take 2 to 4 weeks after receipt of the completed form along with eligibility documents and fees.
The names of all eligible students, admitted in the respective program shall be uploaded in the university website ( www.dde.smuhmts.edu / www.manipalu.com)

How to proceed: Post-application

If all the required documents and individual DDs of payment are correct, admission is granted to the student.
All the admitted candidates are updated on the SMU webpage.
Courseware (hard copy), ID cards and all other student related materials (if any) are delivered through TEFL International in order to mark the candidate as a student of SMU.

How to proceed: Re-application

In order to reapply for the following semester candidates need to download the application form from the website, fill up as per instruction and submit the same at TEFL International along with the requisite fee. TEFL International verifies the same and forwards to Manipal

Enrollment

B.Sc.LT provides two enrollment/admission drives per year pertaining to two semesters of 6 months each. End of each semester would ideally be marked by an examination. However, candidates are allowed to carry forward one semester and sit for two semester-exams at the same time.

April (Spring Drive)

For April Drive, exam will be conducted in February-end/March.
For April Drive, candidates to sign up by 1st week of August (10th August)
SPECIAL OFFER !! Candidates registered for April 2007 Drive for Semester 1 and October 2007 Drive for Semester 2 are eligible to sit for 1st semester or both 1st and 2nd semester exam in March 2008)

October (Fall Drive)

For October Drive, exam will be conducted in August-end/September.
For October Drive, candidates to sign up by 31st December
Candidates registered for October 2007 Drive (submission by 31st December 2007) will be eligible for ONLY 1st semester exam in March 2008

Examination

Examination will be conducted by SMU after every semester. Detailed Rules and Regulations and examination circular will be informed by the Controller of Examination (COE), 6/8 weeks before commencement of the university examinations. Candidates will be informed accordingly.

All modules in all semesters are examinable.

All exams would be closed book examinations.

All the Projects undertaken by students will be examined by SMU.

Examination Centres – Kolkata (India), Bangkok (Thailand)

TEFL International will provide accommodation assistance to candidates arriving at Kolkata or Bangkok for examination

Pre-exam formality

The candidate is informed about the examination schedule and center specifications through the admit card, the website http://dde.smuhts.edu and TEFL International.

Eligible candidate will receive admit card 2/4 weeks before the exam.

Examination date will be communicated 30 days prior to the exam.

Reappearing if failed or skipped exam

If a student fails to clear one or more paper(s), he/she has to reappear for the relevant paper by applying to the University through the re-sitting application along with relevant fees, within the due date specified by the University.

Assessment and Result

The assessment will be done as per the following pattern:

Theory : 4200 marks
Teaching Practice : 400 marks
Project : 200 marks

For theory subjects, 30% of credit will be assigned for Internal Assessment (IA) and 70% of credit for University Examination (UE). Continuous assessment will be done through assignments and practical culminating into the final examination.

Internal Assignments/ Assessment are linked to the final exams. The score is submitted to the University as per the University regulations.

In each subject, a student should secure at least 35% marks in continuous evaluation and 35% more in the university examination and a consolidated average of 40% to be declared 'pass'.

It will take minimum of 60 days to announce the results. Results will be published on the website http://smuhmts.edu and the 'Mark card' will be couriered. However, students have to download the forms in order to apply for the marks / consolidated marks card.

Grades / Scores

Evaluation is done as per the following grading system, based on the student’s performance:

A = Excellent (+70%)
B = Very Good (+60%)
C = Good (+50%)
D = Satisfactory (+40%)
E = Failure

Certification and Exit rules

The student of final semester of degree will have to submit the Degree Issuance Application along with the requisite fee as prescribed by the University during their final semester. The application form can be downloaded from the University website.

Student must submit the A level / Degree certificate duly notarized by any notary public or attested by Indian Embassy along with the form.

Marks card would be sent once the results are announced.

It would take 6/8 months or more to give the formal degree certificate. However, the time would vary depending upon SMU’s decision.
